Breaking the rules
Sometimes I find myself struggling with the idea of implementing true fashion into my daily life. You may wonder what I mean by true fashion. The fashion industry has defined (and still are) true fashion to be the a set of certain rules that you need to follow in order to be an inspiring source to others. And the rules can somehow be a bit confusing at times.
The most important rule is to stand out - you need to at any extent avoid to be regular - to look like everyone else. Feeling your most comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt? Forget it. Unless your looks are unique, a hairstyle to blow people away, or perhaps you have a gap between your front teeth, your favorite jeans and your worn t-shirt just aren´t enough. Well, perhaps not at this moment anyway, because this may change before you know it. The rules are changing rapidly; your worn out style now looks dirty and inappropriate, and your newly ironed shirt with folds is the new COOL. The old rule of NEVER mixing pinks & reds, has (for good it seems) become a MUST-DO. Or what about the terribly dull mix of similar color tones? Suddenly you can´t beat a solid off white outfit from top to toe. Is it only me or is this confusing to you sometimes? Well, I think I´ll go mad at some point if I were to follow these rules at all times. To top it all, the fashion industry has a high priority rule which says, strangely enough, to break the rules.(!) I know, so all the babbling about the rules that are repeatedly reminding us how to make the most out of fashion, suddenly seem kind of pointless.
One of the unspoken rule, but definitely a need to know if you´re aiming for an entry into the world of fashion, is to avoid dressing in one brand from top to toe. I can to some extent agree on that one, if you´re wearing logos on every piece of your outfit. (that wont probably work even if you wear different brands, but anyway.) And I can see the point of loosing your personal identlity and your uniqueness if you go into one store and pick a complete look within 10 square meters. But you know what? I DONT CARE. I really dont. If I find several items by one brand, in one store, that I believe look amazing on me - that´s enough for me. I´m happy. I feel good. And to me that´s the whole point. Because unless I feel like I look my best, I´m sure no one else will see me as an inspiration either, hiding around every corner, swearing and complaining to myself why I chose an outfit I dont feel comfortable wearing.
So today, after work, I was heading for Bik Bok (A norwegian highstreet store) to buy the same pants as Anne, our commercial manager at Flingly, bought one week ago. The same pant that is a copy of the Altewai.Saome pant spotted on Elin Kling last year. Yes, I´m a copycat. And I am a late mass, buying the copy in a highstreet store, not even the same day it arrived in store, but a couple of weeks later. But, you know, when I tried it on, I felt amazing. Yep! I looked great! (thats my inner voice saying that out loud). While breaking my highstreet-ban (that I have kept for 5 weeks), I thought I might as well pick a few other items to try out. So I mixed the Altewai.Saome copies with a t-shirt, a jeans shirt, a jacket and a knit - and I got all these different ideas on how to mix and match these together. Yes, TOGETHER. Same label. Same store. OK, so I´ve turned into one of these no-fashion-brainers buying everything in one store, in fact a small one too.
So during the last few minutes I have been thinking about my shopping spree at Bik Bok wondering if it was such a good idea after all. But then it hit me. I´m breaking the rules. I`M BREAKING THE RULES! I´ve managed to stick to the highest priority rule of them all. Puh(..) I couldn´t be more happy. Finally I have a good excuse when I´m telling everyone that I´m an one-label-outfit-person - and proud of it. It feels like I´m coming out of the closet. The fashion police closet.
Anyway, the Flingly team is publishing some of our daily outift photos on Facebook, so no mumbo jumbo, just plain and informal photos taken at the Flingly office. (You can even spot the empty IKEA frames on the wall.) So if you want to see normal people, some of us more fashionable than others at times, but mostly our casual highstreet or vintage outfits, you need to pay us a visit at the Flingly Facebook page. We have turned up the updates from now, updates you wont be able to follow on Flingly.com. We would be very happy if you stop by, leave us a comment or just simply follow us and let us know if you like something or if there is something you want to read or see more of.
And please, if you normally don´t tend to follow a start up like Flingly on a daily basis, remember you can always break the rules...
